High-performance polyimide materials
Dominion Advanced Materials supplies high-performance polyimide materials engineered for demanding applications where temperature resistance, friction, wear, dimensional stability, strength, and reliability are critical. Our material portfolio includes unfilled, graphite-filled, and specialty-filled polyimide grades designed to provide performance characteristics comparable to commonly specified DuPont™ Vespel® grades. Whether you are replacing an existing Vespel® component, developing a new design, or looking for a cost-effective alternative material, Dominion can provide an engineered polyimide solution matched to your application requirements.

Engineered alternatives — not one-size-fits-all
Polyimide materials are not interchangeable simply because they share the same base polymer. Different formulations are designed to emphasize different characteristics, and Dominion evaluates these requirements when selecting an appropriate material for a component. Our goal is not simply to substitute a material — our goal is to provide the right material for the application.
- Low friction and low wear
- High-temperature performance
- Compressive strength
- Dimensional stability and low thermal expansion

DuPont’s SMP-40025 documentation identifies the material as a direct-formed polyimide with high modulus, low elongation, thermal stability, and thermal oxidation resistance.
Why choose Dominion
When a component is specified as Vespel®, the material itself can represent a significant portion of the overall component cost. Dominion provides high-performance alternative materials and finished components designed to help customers achieve the required performance while potentially reducing material and component costs.
- Engineered alternatives — we evaluate the requirements of the application and identify an appropriate material grade, not a one-for-one polymer swap
- Custom machined components — bushings, washers, bearings, wear rings, seals, spacers, insulators, and custom components
- Aerospace focus — materials and components intended for demanding environments including aerospace, aircraft engines, power generation, and industrial turbomachinery
- Material flexibility — graphite-filled and unfilled polyimide solutions, specialty formulations, and aerospace-grade metallic materials
Need a Vespel® alternative? Send your part number or drawing

Questions engineers ask
Short answers
Are you affiliated with DuPont?
No. DuPont™ and Vespel® are trademarks of their respective owner. Dominion Advanced Materials is not affiliated with or endorsed by DuPont unless specifically stated.
Which Vespel® grades does Dominion offer equivalents for?
Commonly specified grades including SP-1, SP-21, SP-22, SP-3, SP-211, SP-202, SCP-5000, SCP-5050, SCP-5009, SCP-50094, and SMP-40025. See the cross-reference table on this page.
Is every filled Vespel® grade graphite-filled?
No. SP-21 and SP-22 are graphite-filled, but SP-3 is filled with molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂), SP-211 combines graphite with fluoropolymer, and SP-202 is a conductive specialty-filled grade. The filler decides the family — send the grade and we will classify it correctly.
Is a Dominion equivalent a drop-in replacement?
Not by default. Actual substitution depends on temperature, PV, motion, lubrication, and electrical needs. Send the spec and we will recommend an appropriate option — we do not claim a drop-in without seeing the duty.
